She prides herself in successfully being able to transition patients from the acute care setting back to their home. The philosophy of care and values of the Franciscan Sisters of the Eucharist is the reason she chose to work for Franciscan Home Care and Hospice Care. Gretchen has a 30 year history as the director of community education for Franciscan Home Care and Hospice Care. She has a BA in psychology from Albertus Magnus College, New Haven, and a MA in Corporate and Political Communications from Fairfield University, Fairfield, Connecticut. HCA has reached out again today directly to the Governor’s office on the implementation problems generated by the DOH approach, and pressing for solutions to meet the needs of the workers, agencies and plans. It’s a time when we honor those who play an invaluable role in the healthcare community as caregivers and companions and the incredible difference they make in the lives of their patients and the families they serve. Home Care Aides are most often thought to work with the elderly, but this is not the only population they may serve. In addition, Home Care Aide Week takes place the second full week of November. A career in home healthcare can afford more independence and flexibility to employees than traditional residential care facilities.

Tymeek Williams, R.N., BSN, joined the hospice care team in 2020. His BSN degree is from Old Dominion University, Norfolk, Virginia. Most of Ty’s nursing career has been in home health care. A Resolution designating the week of November 12 through 18, 2017, as "Home Care Aide Week" in Pennsylvania in appreciation of those part-time and full-time caregivers who provide assistive and personal in-home care.

And, funding to any plan or provider proved deficient from the state should be reconciled to cost. Fran Mahoney graduated from Gateway Community College in 2015 and has worked in home care since 2016. Home health care nursing has become a specialty in which she both excels and enjoys. Sister Suzanne Gross, FSE, has served as the administrator of Franciscan Home Care and Hospice Care since 1987.

She serves in this ministry as a Franciscan Sister of the Eucharist. Prior to starting and building this faith-based agency, Sister was the administrator of the Curtis Home Saint Elizabeth Center, which she helped build, in Meriden. Sister is the Pro-Life Coordinator for the Archdiocese of Hartford at the Franciscan Life Center. She was a past president of the Connecticut Coalition to Improve End-of-Life Care and presents on aging, end-of-life issues, human suffering, and the culture of life at various conferences around the United States.

This includes the severe challenges being seeing in the contract amendment process where, to date, very few amendments have even been able to be circulated between plans and providers, let alone put into place despite the October 1 effective date of the $2 wage increase. HCA also continues to argue the necessity of financial support for wage increases for non-Medicaid hours that aides provide (i.e. Medicare, private pay, EISEP, etc.). HCA has strongly disagreed with DOH’s intention to cast this rate increase into the plan-provider rate negotiation process. As the new wage is a statewide government-mandate, HCA continues to maintain that the rate funding should be distinctly provided and demarcated to the health plans and, in turn, through the health plans to the providers.

This results in quality one-on-one care for individuals in their home as well as assistance navigating new challenges faced as an aging adult. Karen Christensen, LCSW has been serving as a social worker for Franciscan Home Care and Hospice Care since 2011. She holds a BA degree in sociology and gerontology and a MSW in social work from the University of Connecticut. Karen has held positions at MidState Medical Center and in the Neuromuscular Clinic at the Hospital for Special Care prior to working in home health care. She has been a nurse since 2003 and has worked in home care since 2006. She is fluent in both English and Spanish, which enables her to communicate effectively, support patients, and ensure they have good access to health care.

During the month of November, the home care and hospice community honors the millions of nurses, home care aides, therapists, and social workers who make a remarkable difference for the patients and families they serve. These heroic caregivers play a central role in our health care system and in homes across the nation. To recognize their efforts, we call upon all Americans to commemorate the power of caring, both at the home and in their local communities, and ask them to join with the National Association for Home Care & Hospice by celebrating November as Home Care and Hospice Month. According to the National Association for Home Care & Hospice (nahc.org), approximately 12 million people in the US require some form of home health care. During the week of November 8-14, 2015, we celebrate National Home Care Aide Week.
